Sending an elderly parent to a residential care home can be worrying. The press is full of reports or cases highlighting how frequent neglect and abuse can be in these facilities.

When your parent is out of your sight, you can never be 100% certain of the quality of care they receive, yet you can sleep easier at night by taking a few precautionary measures. Remember that the cases that make the media are the ones where things went wrong. Most people pass their time in care without problems, but that does not make for a good news story.

Choosing the right residential care home is crucial

Here are a few things to think about when trying to find the most suitable facility for your parents:

  • Reputation: Research on the internet to see what other people have said about it and if it features in any reports. Go and visit to see for yourself, talk to staff, the residents and their families.

  • Price: Make sure you understand what the price includes and what you have to pay extra for. Stretching your budget then realizing you cannot afford the extras could leave your parent feeling left out when they see other residents with more. Remember that the most expensive place is not necessarily the best.

  • Location: However lovely that Hawaii nursing home is, you will not be able to visit very often. Choose a place close to you and other family members so that you can pop in regularly to spend time with your parents and keep an eye on proceedings.

If you suspect someone is neglecting or abusing your parents in a care home, it is crucial to understand the options available. You might want to move them, and you might want to take legal action.
