Your fears that your loved one may be a victim of nursing home abuse are not misplaced. The elderly are among the most vulnerable people in society, yet they are constantly subjected to various forms of abuse in the facilities meant to be their safe havens.

Fortunately, there are things that you can do to protect your loved one’s well-being from abuse and ensure they enjoy their sunset years. Below are some of the actions that you can take toward achieving this.

Conduct due diligence

The first step in preventing nursing home abuse is to do your research. Gather as much information as possible about a nursing home and its reputation before settling on a facility for your loved one.

Check online reviews, visit the nursing home in person, and talk to other people who have had experience with the facility. Additionally, you can check the nursing home’s record with state licensing agencies to see if there have been any previous complaints or violations.

Regularly visit your loved one and be wary of signs of abuse

You should also visit your loved one frequently and sometimes unannounced. Pay close attention to their physical and emotional well-being and look out for any telltale indicators of abuse. Things like bruises, bedsores, sudden weight loss, dehydration and signs of depression or fear could point to a larger problem.

Take appropriate action

Time is of the essence if you suspect your loved one is a victim of nursing home abuse. Therefore, you should take urgent steps to protect them. Get them immediate medical attention if necessary, look for an alternative facility or take them home if you can and report the abuse to the nursing home administrator and local authorities.

You might also consider taking legal action to get your loved one the justice they deserve by filing a nursing home abuse claim against the facility.
