Memory care facilities: Choosing a good facility for your loved one

On Behalf of | Mar 25, 2024 | Elder Abuse |

Memory care facilities are meant to provide a safe environment for individuals who have dementia-related conditions. These include Alzheimer’s disease and others that impair cognitive abilities.

Finding the best memory care program for someone requires a comprehensive look at every aspect of care. These factors are a good starting point for evaluating a memory care facility.

Personalization of care

Facilities that offer personalized care plans recognize that each resident has unique needs, preferences and life histories. These often include tailored activities, therapies and dietary preferences that align with the resident’s preferences and current cognitive abilities.

Continuity of care

Continuity of care ensures that residents receive care from the same caregivers they trust. Regular interaction with familiar faces can help reduce anxiety and confusion among residents with memory impairments.

Proper staffing

An ideal facility employs a high ratio of care staff to residents to ensure timely and attentive care is provided. Staff should be trained in dementia care to provide the best support to residents.

Other points to consider

There are several other points that are critical in a memory care environment. These include:

  • Easy-to-navigate layout: Simple floor plans minimize confusion and support independence
  • Familiarity point inclusion: Incorporating elements of familiarity, such as family photos or furniture pieces
  • Anti-wandering program: A combination of secure facility design, monitoring technologies and staff protocols to prevent residents from leaving the premises unsupervised
  • Enrichment and stimulation: Enrichment and stimulation, such as music therapy and physical activity classes

Even with the proper consideration about facilities, family members should still be vigilant about watching their loved ones. If any elements of abuse or negligence are present, acting on behalf of the resident is critical. This may include legal action to help recover damages for the issues.
